The US has new twist on life insurance, being marketed under names such as SOLI, STOLI, and SPIN. In this arrangement, an elderly person sells their life insurance policy to a stranger, who pays them more than the policy is worth. The stranger now has an investment, that will pay off when the person dies, hopefully sooner rather than later.
